(Ronkonkoma, NY) - The Long Island Contractors’ Association, Inc. (LICA) responded positively to the remarks offered by New York Governor Eliot Spitzer is his first annual address to the joint state legislature.
The association reacted favorably to Governor Spitzer’s outline of his administration’s priorities. LICA Executive Director Marc Herbst was among honored guests present in the State Capitol’s Assembly Chamber to listen to Spitzer’s address. Following the message, Herbst responded, “LICA is pleased that Governor Spitzer resurrected the words ‘infrastructure’ and ‘transportation’ to the state’s vocabulary.” He went on to note that these topics were not significantly included in prior annual governor addresses to the legislature in more than a decade.
“Other than highlighting the East Side Access project for the Long Island Rail Road among his major priorities,” Herbst continued, “the comments did not include specifics for the Nassau/Suffolk region. We look forward to learning more about plans for Long Island.” Those details should be included in Spitzer’s first state budget proposal, scheduled to be released on January 31.
LICA, as a partner in the New York Roadway Improvement Coalition (NYRIC), intends to actively involve itself in the budget deliberations to ensure that infrastructure and transportation funding needs are met. Herbst said LICA will communicate with the Spitzer Administration and the state legislature in the coming weeks. As an example, he noted that LICA is sponsoring a legislative reception on behalf of NYRIC in Albany on January 22 in order to exchange ideas and thoughts.
LICA represents the interests of over a hundred of our region’s premier heavy construction general contractors, subcontractors, suppliers and industry supporters. Focused primarily in the transportation infrastructure construction industry, such as highways and other public works, LICA’s member companies play a significant role in the economic vitality of Nassau and Suffolk Counties.
